    Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) is considered the top choice for many high-performance applications as the first commercially viable rare earth permanent magnet material.

     

    Developed in the 1960s, it revolutionized the industry by tripling the energy product of other available materials at the time. SmCo magnets have energy products ranging from 16MGOe to 33MGOe. Their exceptional resistance to demagnetization and excellent thermal stability make them ideal for demanding motor applications.

     

    Compared to Nd-Fe-B magnets, SmCo magnets also boast significantly higher corrosion resistance, although coating is still recommended when exposed to acidic conditions. This corrosion resistance has made them popular in medical applications. Although SmCo magnets have magnetic properties similar to Neodymium Iron Boron magnets, their commercial success has been limited due to the higher cost and strategic value of Cobalt.

     

    As a rare earth magnet, SmCo is an intermetallic compound of samarium (a rare earth metal) and cobalt (a transition metal). The production process involves milling, pressing, and sintering in an inert atmosphere. The magnets are then pressed using either an oil bath (iso statically) or a die (axially or diametrically).
