What are Channel Magnets

Channel magnets are rectangular in shape and consist of a steel shell with either a neodymium or ferrite magnet sunken into one face.

Magnetism is confined to one face only, where it is concentrated to give the maximum holding force possible for the size of the magnet. The steel shell significantly increases the clamping force of the assembly making them excellent value for money. Channel magnets are supplied with a plain hole for convenient mounting located in the middle of the magnet or at either end depending on the size.

Channel magnets do not chip or crack with constant impacting onto a steel surface which is another large advantage. Channel magnets can be used in guides for letterpress printing and commercial sewing.

What are Channel Magnets used for?

Channel Magnetic Assemblies are created using neodymium or ceramic magnets clad in a steel channel. By incorporating magnetic and non-magnetic materials, assemblies amplify pull strength and often use rectangular bases that feature holes for mounting on various surfaces. Magnetic strength can be multiplied by up to 32 times by using steel armatures to concentrate magnetic flux. Such armatures may take the form of backing plates or channels. The maximum increase in power is obtained when magnets are sandwiched between two plates.

For example: A 0.187″ thick x 0.750″ wide x 1″ long rubber magnet has 4 ounces of pull strength. The same magnet bonded to a channel will pull 5 pounds, which is 20 times greater.
