Alnico magnets are known for their hardness and brittleness, making them prone to chipping and cracking. Special machining techniques are required to work with this material. They typically require magnetizing fields of about 3kOe (kilo Oersted) to achieve their desired magnetic properties. Due to their relatively low coercivities, it is important to avoid exposing alnico magnets to repelling fields, as this can partially demagnetize them.
To prevent partial demagnetization, magnetized magnets should be stored with "keepers". If alnico magnets do become partially demagnetized, it is possible to easily remagnetize them. One advantage of cast alnico is its ability to be shaped into intricate and complex forms, which is not possible with other magnetic materials. An example of an alnico application is an alnico rotor assembly with a protected steel sleeve and epoxy potting.
Alnico magnets are mainly composed of aluminum, nickel, cobalt, copper, iron, and sometimes titanium. Compared to other magnetic materials, alnico magnets have high magnetic flux density, resistance to corrosion, and excellent temperature stability, with a maximum working temperature of up to 600℃. Alnico magnets find wide usage in various applications such as sensors, meters, electronics, instruments, medical instruments, teaching, automobiles, aviation, martial arts, and more.
